It was designed as the main stadium of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, hosting Olympic athletics, football, and track and field throwing events. Since October 2008, following the end of the Olympics, it has been open as a tourist attraction. It is now a hub for international and domestic sporting events and leisure activities. In 2022, it hosted the opening and closing ceremonies of the Winter Olympic Games.
